In order to remove the body of a deceased person from Latvia, a permit for the carriage of a dead human body issued by the Health Inspectorate shall be required.
Examining the application at the Health Inspectorate is a free service.

Process description

  1. Service requests
    The following documents shall be submitted to the Health Inspectorate for the receipt of a permit for the carriage of a dead human body:
    - Filled application;
    - a statement (copy) of the medical treatment institution regarding the cause of death;
    - death certificate (copy);
    - a statement of a funeral merchant (regarding a commitment to insert the body of a deceased person into a coffin in conformity with Cabinet Regulation No. 523 of 19 July 2005, Procedures for bringing into or leaving the body of a deceased person, transporting, storing, burying or cremating the body of a dead person from an infectious disease and performing a mandatory pathological investigation for clarifying the diagnosis after the death of the patient) requirements).

    In order to receive a Health Inspectorate permit for reinsuring (in conformity with the binding regulations of the relevant local government), the following documents shall be submitted together with a completed application:
    - death certificate (copy);
    - a cemetery statement.

  2. Receipt of services
    The service is received in accordance with the application of choice.
