Priorities and values of the Latvian Presidency

The Latvian Presidency of the Council of the European Union will take place during the first 6 months of 2015. When Latvia joined the EU, it became a part of the EU decision making process and by taking on the presiding state function, Latvia shows its willingness and readiness for governance at the highest level of the EU.

To ensure consistency during preparation and implementation of the Presidency, as well as synergy between different elements of the presidency preparation process, three important values of the EU and Latvia (s.c. “3i”) have been defined:
  • Involvement (Iesaistīšanās);
  • Growth (Izaugsme);
  • Sustainability (Ilgtspēja).
These values offer a conceptual framework for the elaboration of the work programme of the Latvian presidency and further definition of priorities of the presidency.
The Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Latvia have approved three potential priority areas for the presidency:
  1. More competitive EU as a basis for growth, improvement of quality of human life and contribution to the development of the future.
  2. Reinforcement of the information community and the use of provided opportunities for the future development of the EU.
  3. Reinforcement of the role of the EU on a global scale, formation of a welfare and security space in neighbouring regions of the EU.
